PMBA Statement on Diversity and Inclusion

For Immediate Release
PMBA Executive Director
July 2, 2020 (Rockville, MD)—The Public Media Business Association (PMBA) is firmly committed to fostering an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion, both within the organization and within the public media system it serves. Our member stations are deeply committed to their communities and often see and experience the systemic racism that persists in their regions. As an association, we mourn the loss of George Floyd as well as countless other victims of hate crimes and prejudice.
The PMBA board wishes to make a clear statement on these issues and outline our plan for action. As an organization that provides human resources education for public media stations, the board believes it is critical that we equip our members with the tools they need to tackle prejudice and racism head on. During its June meeting, the board committed to taking the following actions to better serve our membership and the community at large:
  • Provide members with education via webinars and offer tools to address diversity development at the station level.
  • Create downloadable resources for stations to help them foster a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • Create content for our conferences that directly addresses current events and develops best practices for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Review the association’s own practices to ensure that PMBA board members and volunteers represent diverse backgrounds.
  • Keep an open dialog with the membership through regular conversations on how these topics affect individual stations, and respond with education and resources accordingly.
As an organization dedicated to public media professionals, PMBA is committed to serving the entire community and being an active participant in the fight against racism and inequality. We recognize that we can do better as an organization, and we are committed to taking the necessary steps toward progress, change, and healing.
