Smaller and Nonprofit Newsrooms are Weathering the Economic Impact of COVID-19 Better Than Most, According to One Survey

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism published a report looking at the financial impact of COVID-19 on 165 independent newsrooms from around the globe. The responses revealed “dramatic but unequal” consequences but—as you might expect from a report entitled “few winners, many losers”—the majority reflected a pretty bleak situation. But! There’s “a significant minority” of independent news organizations surviving—and even thriving—through the crisis.

Broadcast Deal-making Bounced Back In Third Quarter, Says Kagan

After the pandemic lockdowns put a damper on deal-making earlier this year, Kagan reports broadcast mergers and acquisitions picked up the pace during the third quarter. Radio and television deals totaled $534.7 million during the three months ended Sept. 30, in what the firm labels a “substantial rebound” from $90.3 million in the second quarter which was an all-time low attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic.

API Microgrants Boost Public Radio Stations’ Election Coverage

Three public radio stations have received support from the American Press Institute in a second round of microgrants for election coverage.   The grants are from API’s Trusted Elections Network Fund, which aims “to improve audience-centered elections coverage.” The three public radio stations were among 11 grantees.

PBS Celebrates 50 Years of Public Television

PBS is celebrating its golden anniversary this week, as the public media provider first began operations 50 years ago.   The Corporation for Public Broadcasting established PBS in 1969. PBS’ first broadcast was “The French Chef” with Julia Child. Today, PBS has 330 member stations serving all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, and American Samoa, offering more than 1,200 hours a year of programming to fulfill its mission of educating, inspiring, entertaining, and expressing a diversity of perspectives.
