2020 Board Nominations

The following individuals have been nominated for the four Board seats that expire this year. Per the PMBA Bylaws, Board members may run for a second term. Three of the four director positions are currently running for second terms. One Board position is vacant due to a director completing a second term and rolling off. To be appointed for a second term, Board members must win re-election with the PMBA membership.

Below are the bios for each candidate running for Board director along with the answers to questions that were provided during the nomination process. To cast your vote, please follow this link.

Only one person from each member station may vote in the election. You will be asked to provide your name and station, however this is for verification purposes only and your vote selections will not be tied in any way to your information.

Nicole Banman

Briefly describe why you feel you would be a valuable addition to the PMBA Board.
Nicole had the pleasure of sitting on the PMBA Board of Directors for the past three years and served as its Treasurer the past two years. She is intimately familiar with the operations and financials of the organization. Nicole is interested in working to secure the future viability of the public media industry and ensuring that every U.S. citizen has access to reliable information and educational resources.

In addition to the official roles listed above, Nicole spent many hours volunteering at her child's elementary school and as a coach/assistant coach for her son's baseball and track & field teams when he was young. She regularly assists the Scout troop in completing community service projects and serves as an adult leader for campouts and other trips.
 
Bio
Nicole Banman has held the position of Director of Finance & Administration at Kansas Public Radio (KPR) and the Audio-Reader Network in Lawrence, Kansas, since December 2007. She received her B.S. in Accounting from Kansas State University in 2006 and her M.S. in Accounting from the University of Kansas in 2011. Nicole began her first term on the PMBA Board of Directors in May 2017. She was elected to the role of Treasurer in May 2018, which came with a position on the Executive Committee. Since then, she has also served as the Chair of the Finance Committee. In addition to her full-time role at KPR, Nicole works part-time as the Director of Finance & Administration for Sporting Kaw Valley, a nonprofit youth soccer organization. Nicole is proud to volunteer for various groups within her community - the Lawrence Tae Kwon Do School, Scout Troop 61, the Sexual Trauma & Abuse CARE Center, and St. John Catholic School. She and her son train in the Korean martial arts together and have achieved the rank of first-degree black belt in tae kwon do. Nicole loves to train and spar with her teenage son as well as camping, hiking, and paddling together. She enjoys watching all sports, in person or online. Nicole feels extremely fortunate to have had the opportunities to make a career out of nonprofit accounting and compliance and hopes to continue to contribute to nonprofit organizations for years to come.

Anthony Padgett

Briefly describe why you feel you would be a valuable addition to the PMBA Board.
I have experience working with multiple licensee types and am familiar with station operations from multiple management level perspectives. I have gained a unique understanding of station and operational needs through my experience and believe that that experience will help benefit others and provide a different viewpoint to some of the system’s needs.
 
Volunteer Experience
Over the years I have enjoyed volunteering with a variety of organizations at the local and national level. Some of these are personal in nature with community organizations such as Rotary and local non-profits, and others are specifically related to public media. I currently serve on the following boards or commissions, NETA, OSBE, Affinity Group Coalition (AGC), SC Arts Alliance, and PMBA.
 
Bio
I joined South Carolina ETV in October of 2017 after serving as Georgia Public Broadcasting's Chief Operating Officer where my responsibilities included the management and oversight of the organization's day-to-day operational needs, technology services, content creation and distribution, digital and education innovations and business services. I also served as the Sr. Vice President of Content and Operations at WJCT in Jacksonville, Florida, overseeing Technology/Operations, Studio/Facilities, Radio/News/Digital and Programming/Production, as well as Chief Engineer at WBCC in Florida. My career began in the United States Air Force as a broadcasting engineer.

Briefly describe why you feel you would be a valuable addition to the PMBA Board.
As a currently serving member of the Board, working in a business that specializes in funding Public Media, I believe I have a unique perspective to contribute to this business association. I would like to continue to assist in the stewardship of the PMBA and hope you will support my nomination. Thank you.

PMBA Board, The Honor Foundation, Many JFS projects serving homeless Parking and hunger programs, Operation Springboard (halfway houses).
 
Bio
35 Years as a CEO of both public and private business. Currently, CEO of CARS a Car donation program serving thousands of nonprofits, amongst them over 430 NPR & PBS partners.

Briefly describe why you feel you would be a valuable addition to the PMBA Board.
I have 15 years of HR experience helping our staff to be fulfilled and motivated. Sharing ideas and finding solutions is a second nature to me. I can bring a creative outlook paired with analytical skills, based on expertise and compassion.
 
Volunteer Experience
I am drone to save the nature and care for the animals causes. I have volunteered in the local animal shelter, clean the beach campaigns. For many years my family supported local homeless shelter by volunteering to serve the meals. I do not have any board experience, but confident that I can bring fresh prospective.
 
Bio
Seventeen years ago, I moved to the United States from Ukraine, leaving management position in international company. I have started working at Capital Public Radio a year after that. Since then I changed a couple of roles with the company moving up and learning how people function inside out. As HR and Business Manager I work toward creating a happy workplace with strong and diverse work culture.

My name is April Jones and I currently work for KUED PBS at the University of Utah in the accounting department. I have worked in accounting since 2003 as a Finance manager and Accounting Assistants. I have worked doing accounting for an Advertising agency and KSL TV.

Briefly describe why you feel you would be a valuable addition to the PMBA Board.
Having been involved with Public Media for over six years and having just gone through an OIG audit, I feel my experience would be helpful to other members.

Bio
I worked in the newspaper business for 28 years before becoming the Director of Finance at the College of Journalism at the University of Florida. As Director of Finance at the college, all financial reporting functions and duties of our public TV and Radio stations are also my responsibility. My wife Terri and I live in Ocala Florida, have four married children, four grandchildren and a fifth one due in June. Interests are time with family and sports.

Briefly describe why you feel you would be a valuable addition to the PMBA Board.
 
I’m passionate about improving how public media operates. I believe my background in law, accounting, and non-profit operations and my experiences driving business improvement in complex organizational settings would make me a valuable contributor to the PMBA board and help PMBA fulfill its mission of being the go-to trade association serving the business needs of public media.
 
Volunteer Experience
Most recently, Michael served on the 2020 PMBA Conference planning committee where he helped secure speakers, review session proposals and assisted with PMBA’s response to COVID-19 by helping develop a station financial survey and plan for the virtual conference. Previously, he served as a member of the American University Washington College of Law Donor Scholarship Committee from 2013 to 2016, where he worked with committee members to award donor funded scholarships to deserving law students. During his law studies, Michael served as a student attorney in the American University Washington College of Law Community and Economic Development Law Clinic, where he counseled local non-profit organizations on tax exempt law, local regulatory obligations and cooperative agreements. During his undergraduate studies, Michael was a volunteer writer covering national and local news topics for United Press International, The Times Beacon Record and the American University student newspaper, the Eagle.
 
Bio
Michael Scher is the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis at WAMU 88.5 American University Radio, where he is responsible for station financial planning, forecasting, and modeling; budget management, financial statement preparation and financial policies and procedures. Michael was formerly the Assistant Director of Business Operations at American University’s Washington College of Law, where he was responsible for procurement activities, campus auxiliaries, internal financial reporting, and grants management. Michael is a three-time graduate of American University, most recently completing his Master of Science in Accounting in 2019. He is a barred Attorney (MD), having received his juris doctor degree, cum laude, from American University’s Washington College of Law in 2013. His interest and passion for public media comes from his undergraduate studies at American University’s School of Communication where he graduated with a bachelors in print journalism in 2008. Michael lives with husband, Max, in Washington D.C.
