NLRB Postpones Rule Requiring Union Posters in the Workplace

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has postponed the date by which employers will be required to hang a poster informing workers of their union rights. A federal court that is hearing a challenge to the legality of the union poster rule requested that the NLRB delay it. The rule, which would require employers to notify their employees of their rights to start a union, will take effect on April 30, rather than Jan. 31, as the NLRB had proposed.

Kerger Calls for Views to Oppose Mitt Romney's Stance Towards TV Funding

PBS President Paula Kerger wants viewers to oppose Mitt Romney's call to end funding of public broadcasting. Kerger said Wednesday that she recognizes the United States has to make tough budget decisions but defended PBS as an effective public-private partnership. Romney has criticized public funding for PBS while campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination. He has said he doesn't intend to "kill Big Bird" of "Sesame Street" but that public TV shows will have to become ad-supported.

IRS Extends Tax-Filing Deadline to April 17

Taxpayers will have until Tuesday, April 17 to file their 2011 tax returns and pay any tax due, because April 15 falls on a Sunday, and Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls this year on Monday, April 16. According to federal law, District of Columbia holidays affect tax deadlines in the same way that federal holidays do, giving all taxpayers two extra days to file this year.
